December 21st

Hi Parents,

Another super busy and fun week in Room 80!

This week we reviewed the letter sounds "sh" and "ch" and practiced writing words with these sounds. We also reviewed the words of the week we have learned so far this year.

In math we solved two different problems this week. The first was "You have 13 presents to wrap.  You have red, green, and orange wrapping paper.  What are the different ways you can wrap the presents. The second problem was "Tom has 11 candy canes. He has red and green candy canes. How many of each colour could he have?
We then shared the strategies we used with each other.

In writing this week we were given a picture prompt and then had to write about it. We also read the story " Snowman at Night"and wrote about what we would do if we were a snowman at night.

We did a variety of guided drawings this week. The students really enjoyed it. We used a website called Art Hub. Here is the link, if you would like to try this at home.

In social studies we finished our landmark flip book. We learned that Canada has many landmarks. The three examples we leaned about were the lighthouse, the wheat fields and the rocky mountains.

We did caroling this week with the whole school, which was really fun and on movie/PJ day we got to watch a movie in the gym with the whole school. We even got popcorn.

Today was the last day  for our first sessions of clubs. Students will get a new club in January.

December 14th

Hi Parents,

We had a very busy week getting ready for our Christmas Concert on Wednesday. Everyone did an amazing job!  We also had the chance to go and watch the other grade 1-3 concert on Thursday afternoon, we really enjoyed it!

We continued practicing our literacy and math skills through math and literacy centers.

In writing this week we worked on retelling a story. We read the story "The Mitten" by Jan Brett and then retold the story using the sentence starters First, Then, Next, Last.  Each day we added a new part to the story and drew a picture to go along with it. We also decorated our own mitten.

We also learned a new letter sound, "Sh".

In Social Studies, we continued our learning about Landmarks. We learned that a landmark of Alberta is the Rocky Mountains. We added this to our flip book of landmarks.

Our words of the week this week were: big, can, little, went
Next week we will be reviewing all the words of the week we have learned so far this year and then in the New Year we will start our words of the week again.

A couple weeks ago we worked with our grade 2 buddies to come up with a description of a snowman and  this week we used that description to create our snowman using paper, markers, and chalk pastels.

We also got our gift bags ready this week. We helped sort out all the supplies, decorated our bags and stuffed the bags. They are now all ready to be sent out to our friends at other schools! Thank you to everyone who contributed! :)

December 6th

Hi Parents,

We discovered that we have an Elf on the Shelf in our classroom. He has been moving all around our room and even left us two notes!  We named our Elf Oreo! :)

In social studies, we continued our learning from last week about maps and created our very own map of the classroom. We also started learning about landmarks. A landmark is on object or feature that helps you know where you are. They are easily seen and can usually be seen from far away. In Cranston our landmark is the Cranston Windmill. In our community of Calgary, we have two landmarks, which are the Saddledome and Calgary Tower.
We read the story "Goodnight Canada", which helped us learn a little bit more about the provinces of Canada.

We learned about the sounds "ch" "er" and the letter "y" when it makes the long "e" sound at the end of words and practiced sounding out words with these sounds.

In writing, we wrote about our best day ever or what our best day ever would be.

Our words of the week this week were: come, look, me, what
Our words of the week next week will be: big, can, little, went

In math, we continued working on our math centers.

We also went and watched the kindergartens perform Christmas songs for their Christmas Concert. They did an amazing job!

In  gym this week, we learned about what our bodies do when we are exercising and did fitness stations.

In music, we have been working really hard on getting our Christmas concert ready for next week.  We are getting super excited about performing for our families! :)
