June 21st

Hi Parents,

This week in writing we wrote about our dream summer vacation. Some of us wrote about real places we would want to go, some of us wrote about real places we already go to and some of us used our imaginations to think of places we would want to go, such as back in time to live with the dinosaurs.

In math this week we combined measurement and estimations, both of which we have been working on in the last couple weeks. We had a variety of objects around the classroom that we  irst had to estimate how long or tall it would be, then we had to measure it, with cubes, to find out if we were right. We also reviewed addition and subtraction through math centers and did some math problem solving questions.

We continued working on our literacy skills through literacy centers.

In Science we continued to learn about the different animal classes. This week we learned about amphibians, insects and fish. We also watched Wild Kratts to help us learn more about the animals in these classes.

We also continued our animal art. This week we leaned about to draw the tiger and monkey. Next week we will finish off our zoo animals by learning how to draw the camel and snow leopard.

We have really been enjoying our read aloud of "Magic Tree House: Night of the Ninjas" and will be finishing the last three chapters next week.

Reminders:

Monday June 24th-is Sports Day. Sports day was moved because of the weather on Thursday. We will be doing Sports Day no matter what tomorrow. If the weather is bad we will be doing it inside the gym.

June 14th

Hi Parents,

We started our week off with a trip to the Leighton Center. We got to do two different art projects. The first was a painting and the second was a wire sculpture. We got to go for a walk to Echo Hill and make our very own echo! We also got to go through the Leighton house and learn more about the history of Mr. and Mrs. Leighton, who started the Leighton Center.  It was a great day! We ran out of time to finish our projects so on Tuesday we were given time to finish our paintings and add the finishing touches to our wire sculptures.  Also, our grade 2 buddies came in and we were able to share our art with them.

In writing this week we wrote letters to our future teacher, telling them a bit more about ourselves. We also did free writes in literacy centers.

In math, we continued to learn and practice measurement with non-standard units. We discussed how we might change what we use to measure something depending on how large it is. We talked about how it would be very difficult or take a long time to measure the classroom with cubes like we did last week with smaller items.  So this week we used our hands and feet to measure larger things like shelves and the length of the classroom.  We also introduced estimation this week. We discussed how estimation is making your best guess. We then practice estimating with estimation stations. We went to five different stations with different items (straws, bottle caps, paper clips, cubes and blocks). We had to first make an estimate and record it in our books. Then together with our group we counted the items to see how close our estimation was.

We  went to a presentation done by the Calgary Public Library. They told us all about their summer reading challenge and about all the different programs they have during the summer time!

We also had Constable Baker come in to do some work with us. We learned about what police do in the community and got to ask her questions about her job. We then read a story and did an activity about what we are good at and what traits we have. We then got to design our own star and write  five traits that we have, such as brave, funny. artistic, respectful, helpful etc.

In art this week we finished our art from the Leighton Center. We also drew the 4th animal in our animal series of all the animal we learned about at the zoo. This week we drew a penguin. We also made cards to go along with our Leighton Center art for Fathers Day.

June 7th

Hi Parents,

This week in writing we continued our work with Eric Carle books. We read and retold two more of his stories. The first was "The Very Busy Spider" and the second was "The Greedy Python". We continued to work on our writing through free writes during literacy centers as well.
We also worked on creating new goals for our writing as we go into grade 2. We discussed some things that we could be working on and then students went and looked through their work to decide on a new writing goal for themselves.

We continued to work on our words of the week through literacy centers and word work activities.

In Math this week we introduced measurement. We discussed what measurement means, what we can use to measure things and why it is important to know how to measure. We also discussed a variety of jobs in our communities that use measurement regularly. We were then given an opportunity to practice measuring a variety of items around the classroom using non standard measurement. This week we were using Unifix Cubes to help us measure the classroom items.

In Science we discussed the difference between wild and domesticated animals. We then sorted these animals into groups in a Venn diagram as we know that some animals are wild, some are domesticated and some can be both.  We also started to discuss animal classes and what makes animals a part of these classes. This week we learned about the characteristics of mammals and then came up with some examples of mammals that we know.

We continued our animal art. This week we learned how to draw a bear and a panda bear. We love learning how to draw all the animals we researched at the zoo. If you are interested in drawing other things at home the website is below!

We were lucky enough to have Michael Mitchell come in on Monday afternoon for a concert. We got to watch and sing along with him.

We had our second session of Club Friday. We have one more Club Friday left for this year!
