February 22nd

Hi Parents,

This week we continued our learning about word families, sequencing stories, practicing our writing and listening to reading through literacy centers.

In math we continued to practice making 10, addition to12 and building our number sense through math centers. We also played our favourite math game....BUZZ.

Our words of the week this week were: an, do, into, them
Our words of the week next week are: came, does, new, will

In word work this week we practiced our words of the week and also discussed when we use periods. Many of us are trying to use them in our writing, but are not always putting them in the right place. We learned that periods are used at the end of a sentence and they help tell us when we need to take a break and pause when we are reading. We practiced together putting periods in the right spot and taking the out when they are in the middle of a sentence. This is a tricky skill, but we will continue to practice.

We also learned about the setting of a story and that it is the time and place that a story takes place. We worked with our grade 2 buddies to come up with a description of a setting for our character that we created together a few weeks ago. We worked so well with our grade 2 buddies and came up with some really creative settings that helped us to start "visualize" the setting.

In writing this week we wrote about our long weekend, sounds like everyone had a great time!

Yesterday we had an amazing field trip to Fort Calgary where we learned about what Calgary was like in the past. We learned about the Blackfoot and the Settlers. During our field trip we had an opportunity to dress up in clothing from the past. Some of us were dressed as settlers, some of us were dressed in Indigenous clothing and some of us were dressed in mountie clothing. We also got to go to 4 different stations and hold a variety of different artifacts from the past. One station was toy artifacts and we got to play with them! We also learned about how the Indigenous people and the Settlers made their houses back then and we even got to build a log cabin ourselves! We also got to go through the museums and sorted items into groups of building materials and tools. It was such a wonderful experience and we are so happy that we had the chance to go on this amazing field trip!!

In writing today we wrote about our field trip. We reflected on our trip to Fort Calgary and shared the different things we learned and what our favourite part was.

We also had our second session of Club Friday round 2. Everyone seems to really be enjoying their clubs. We have one more session of this round and then we will be changing to our third and last round of clubs for this year.

February 13th

Hi Parents,

Happy 100 days of school! We did it! :) We are more then half way done grade one!

This week was a short but busy week.

We continued to practice our skills through literacy and math centers.

We also solved a snowman math problem this week. Our question was "A snowman wears 9 buttons. Some are on his face and some are on his belly. How many ways could the snowman wear his buttons? Show using number bonds".  After we had solved this problem we shared the different ways we came up with the answer. We discovered that there were many different ways to solve this problem and more then one answer.

Our words of the week this week were: down, off, over, up
Our words of the week next week are: an, do, into, them

We also were given another mystery word to solve in making words. This time it was an 8 letter word. We practiced making 2 letter, 3 letter, 4 letter and 5 letter words. We finally discovered the mystery word was STRENGTH.

Last week we created our own characters and wrote a character description about them. This week we used our descriptions to help us create a puppet of our character. We read over our descriptions and then drew our character on a piece of paper. Next, we cut them out and added a popsicle stick. We even had to some time to play with them and start to create our own stories.

Today was our 100th day of school! To help us celebrate we wrote about all the things we have learned in the last 100 days of school. We also made 100 day glasses and drew a self portrait of what we think we will look like when we are 100.
We also celebrated Valentines day today! Along with the other grade one classes in our hallway, we tried to come up with 100 acts of kindness. We were each given a heart, which we wrote and drew pictures of things we can do that show kindness.
We also, decorated our Valentine's bags and handed out our Valentine's day cards to each other!

February 8th

Hi Parents,

This week in writing we continued our work on character and started creating our very own characters. We brainstormed ideas about what our characters will look like and act like. Then we wrote a character description describing our characters. We discussed adding as much detail to our writing as possible to help the reader picture the character.

We also continued our learning through literacy and math centers.

Our words of the week this week were: did, no, out, this
Our words of the week next week are: down, off, over, up

We were given another  6 letter mystery word to solve in making words. We practiced together making 2 letter, 3 letter, 4 letter, and 5 letter words. We also discovered that the mystery word was SPENDS.

In science this week we discussed our five senses and what we see, hear, smell, taste and feel during the winter season. In our visual journals we wrote, drew pictures and labelled the different things our senses experience in winter time.

We also learned about Chinese New Year. We watched a video, which taught us about the legends  and traditions of Chinese New Year. We also read a story and got to see some different Chinese artifacts, such as lanterns, fans and chopsticks. We discussed how our traditions are different and similar to the Chinese traditions. We also got to make a dragon mask in art.

It was Tech Day on Wednesday! We got to go on the computers with our grade 2 buddy class. We read and explored with Raz-kids. We are really enjoying Raz-Kids and are looking forward to using it in literacy centers!

In art this week we designed our back cover for the yearbook contest. Next week all the students' art work will be put up and we will get to vote for which one we want for the front and back cover. We are designing for the back cover and everyone worked really hard on their designs!

We continued our read aloud of "Stanley in Space". We are listening to the story and creating a storyboard as we listen. For each chapter we draw a picture and write a sentence telling what happened in the chapter. The story is getting exciting and we are really enjoying reading another Flat Stanley story!
