Thursday February 28th

Hi Parents,

This week we started new literacy centers. Students are still working on their listening to reading and writing about their favourite character.  We are also still working on word families, but we now have word families cards where we have to fill out the first letter and then write the words of that word family in our word work books. One of our new centers was to practice our rhyming words. Students are given cards with four different pictures on them and cubes that have pictures on them. They have  to find the cubes that rhyme with the picture. Then once they have matched up all the picture and cubes they have to draw and label three things that rhyme. Another one of our new centers has students practicing their writing. During this time students are allowed to write about any topic they would like. Our last new center is Raz-Kids on the computer. Students are working at a computer with headphones to read, listen and answer comprehension questions on their Raz-Kids account.

We practiced our words of the week this week.
Our words of the week this week were: came, does, new, will
Our words of the week next week are: back, just, old, there

In math this week we practiced adding using a 100's chart. We learned about how we count the jumps we make on the 100's chart to find our answer. We practiced a variety of addition questions using our 100's chart and practiced by rolling dice to get our numbers. We also practice our math skills through math centers and a problem solving question. Our problem this week was "You are a settler on your farm. You have horses and chickens to take care of. In your field you can see 20 legs. How many horses and chickens could there be? Show as many different answers as you can.".  This was definitely a tricky problem for many of us to solve but we had a good discussion afterwards about strategies we can use.

Wednesday February 27th was Pink Shirt Day. Along we our grade 2 buddies we discussed what it means to be bullied. We learned that bullying is when someone is mean to us repeatedly. We discussed strategies for dealing with bullies and how we can show kindness to others who are being bullied. We watched the video explaining how Pink Shirt Day was started and then designed our own pink shirts to represent our commitment to being kind to others.

In Social Studies, we continued our learning from our field trip to Fort Calgary. At Fort Calgary we had the opportunity to go to four different stations of artifacts: toys, homes, horses and police. We discussed the artifacts that we saw and got to hold. We drew these artifacts in our visual journals. The next day we discussed how these things are similar or different to what we have now. We again had four groups: homes, police, toys and transportation and discussed what these things look like now. We also discussed the homes that we learned about at Fort Calgary. Tipis and log cabins. We drew these kinds of houses in our visual journals and labelled our pictures with what they were made of. We also came up with a list of questions we have about these homes.

In gym this week we started our skipping unit.

Reminders:

Please return any family questionnaires as soon as possible.

We have started a school clothing campaign. Shirts are $10 and hoodies are $30. If you are interested in purchasing clothing all the options are up on the healthy hunger website. More information is also in the Parent Weekly letter sent home this week and last week.

Thursday March 7th is Literacy Night from 6:00-7:00pm. This is an open house format where parents are invited to come and learn fun learning strategies and games to help your child build their literacy skills.

Monday March 11th-Thursday March 14th is our swimming week. We will be swimming in the afternoon. We will be leaving the school at 12:15 and returning by 2:30
