September 28th

Hi Parents,

This week we focused on what it means to belong. We discussed how when we feel belonging we feel safe, happy and that we can be ourselves.  We talked about places that we belong, such as home, and school.
In connection with our discussion about belong we read the stories "Shi-shi-etko" and "When we were Alone"
In the story "Shi-shi-etko" a girl named Shi-shi-etko is getting ready to go to a school very far away and she will be away from her family until the spring. In the story she collects memories and special items to help her remember her home. We talked about what was special to us from our homes and then drew pictures in our visual journals of what we would want to bring with us or hold in our hearts if we were going away. We also wrote about things that were special to us in our writing journals.

We also read the story "When we were Alone" which told the story of Nosisim and her Nokom, who also went to a school far away from her family. Nosisim asks her Nokom why she wears such bright clothing, why her hair is so long, why she speaks her language so much and why she spends so much time with her brother. Nokom tells Nosisim how she went to a school where they wanted them to all be the same so they were not allowed to wear bright clothes, they had to cut their hair short, they were not allowed to speak their language and they were not allowed to see their siblings. We talked about how we would feel if our school was like this. We asked the question, would  you feel like you belonged at school if you were not allowed to be yourself?

In math this week, we continued learning about patterns. We created patterns and recorded them in our books. We also created patterns for our friends and then they had  to finish the patterns. We did math stations where we had a variety of objects and materials that we had to sort into groups.

We met with our grade 2 buddies again this week. Last time they taught us a math game so this time we taught them how to play higher or lower and go fish!

We also learned about the letter C this week and reviewed all the letters we have talked about so far this year (m,s,f,t,b,c) . We continued trying to find the beginning and end sounds of words using all the letters we've learned. We also continued working on our printing by practicing printing the letter C.

We learned about Terry Fox this week and then today we did the Terry Fox Run. It was super fun, and we all did such a great job!

Students will be focusing on belonging and place as part of their participation. Students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on this day. This will be continuing with the work we did this week.

Wednesday October 3rd is Picture Day!

Wednesday, October 10th is our first fun lunch. You are able to go in and order until Thursday, October 4th. See the weekly for  the instruction sheet to help you get signed up for Healthy Hunger.
